Welcome, McKinney Roots!

August 28, 2020

We have an exciting announcement to make! Local donation garden McKinney Roots has officially become a part of the Seed Project Foundation.

McKinney Roots occupies five acres in west McKinney. Over the last few years, they have grown and donated thousands of pounds of organic produce and eggs to organizations serving the food-insecure in Collin County. Generally, when someone receives a distribution from a food pantry, it’s understandably full of shelf-stable items like pasta, beans, and canned foods. McKinney Roots supplements our local food pantries with fresh, organic produce often in short supply to those experiencing food insecurity.

Now that they have become part of our organization, we are beyond excited at the possibilities. Our first project, already underway, is reconfiguring the irrigation lines to expand production into the full five acres; our goal is to grow and give away 20,000 pounds of food in 2021. To that end, we are shopping for a greenhouse so we can start our own transplants. Next, we’re going to install a new hen house and 300 chickens to produce 100 dozen eggs per week.

Can you help us achieve our goals? Send us a donation or sign up to volunteer! Together, we can end hunger in McKinney and beyond.
