Farm Tour 2021 | Chefs for Farmers

Nov 6th, 2021

It’s hard to believe it had been two whole years since our last farm tour, and it felt soooo good to get back on the bus! We loaded up 50 eager folks bright and early and headed out to the country for the day.

Our first stop was donation farm McKinney Roots! Toby poured mimosas as we got off the bus, then Farmer Tucker Nickols and Executive Director Vicki Deerman showed us around the farm, explaining that everything grown at McKinney Roots is donated to organizations serving the hungry in Collin County. Each chicken in the flock lays an egg nearly every day, enabling them to donate almost a hundred dozen eggs every single week. Chef Drea from Harvest prepared a delicious seasonal quiche, and then it was time to get back on the bus!

The second stop was to Profound Microfarms, in nearby Lucas. Farmer Jeff Bednar walked us through the hydroponic greenhouse operation, encouraging us to pinch off and sample leaves as we went. The Buzz Buttons were a huge hit! Profound Foods chef Joel Orsini served oyster mushroom tacos with a smear of goat cheese from Lost Ruby Ranch on fresh tortillas made with locally prepared masa – it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Our last stop of the day was to Water Boy Farms, where Kim Townsend gave us a fascinating introduction to beekeeping. Girl with Flour, Erika Radtke, served pumpkin spiced cream puffs made with honey from McKinney Roots for dessert.

The weather could not have been more beautiful! We want to thank all of our farms and chefs for participating, as well as all the participants and Chefs for Farmers for inviting us to host the tour as part of their festivities. Be on the lookout for our annual spring farm tour in May of 2022!
