Summer SWAC 2024

There’s nothing better than a warm Texas evening raising money for McKinney Roots! We had a blast during our Summer Supper with a Cause at Harvest at the Masonic. It is always so nice seeing so many people get excited and support our mission.

We wanted our Hydroponic Greenhouse to get some love for this Supper with a Cause. Back in 2022, MCDC gave McKinney Roots a grant to build our Hydroponic Greenhouse, so we can grow food all year round for the underserved in our community.

Having the ability to grow food 12 months out of the year is crucial for us. We all know that Texas weather is temperamental, and though we can grow food out in our fields for most of the year, those rough summer and winter months can be tricky. The hydroponic greenhouse lets us fill in those gaps.

The money raised during this Supper with a Cause benefited our greenhouse operations, seeds, fertilizer, pest control, and maintenance.

McKinney Roots is on track to grow over 30,000 pounds of food since becoming an initiative of the Seed Project. 30,000 pounds of nutrient-dense food going directly to our community in need. Events like Supper with a Cause help us grow that number exponentially. At this dinner, we raised over $30,000! We can’t thank our supporters enough!

Chef Dre made many delicious dishes, including a watermelon salad with watermelons from Waterboy Farm in Lucas.

Leslee Ortega is our Summer featured artist at Harvest at the Masonic and her pieces are a showpiece on Chef Dre’s dining room walls we’d loved showing her off at dinner. Her pieces will be for sale all summer long at Harvest at the Masonic!
